This is a special record. It's also pretty mysterious, so this is my attempt to piece the puzzle together.
Oiro Pena is a Finnish jazz collective helmed by prolific composer Antti Vauhkonen. The collective was launched in 2018 and in 2019 this astral, outsider jazz, self-titled 10” EP was released in a limited edition by the ultra-cool Finnish label Ultraääni. Ultraääni is run by visual artist Arsi Keva who often creates the artwork for the records on his label, including this two-color silkscreen print jacket for Oiro Pena's record. Musically it's beautifully primitive, spiritual jazz which sounds more like Harlem in the 1970s than Tampere, Finland in 2019.
This gives a clue, from the description of another OP record: "With a background in electronic music, Vauhkonen explains his transition into avant-garde / spiritual jazz: 'It came from Krautrock first, I started listening to Can, and searched through all the psychedelic German rock bands. There was a lot of jazzier elements there, horns and saxophones, I think it came from there, and then I found Miles Davis and John Coltrane (and) started listening to the early Sun Ra material.'"
This is the 4th pressing of the 10" and I was able to get a few precious copies. These won't last long, so if this sounds up your street, snag one now.
