P A S T

Saturday October 12, 2024 at 7:00pm (films start at 7:30pm)
Bethlehem, PA – email for address
Free admission

LV Cinema Club brings the cinema to our friends' backyard in Bethlehem, PA for a fun screening of sci-fi short films from the 1920s–1970s, projected right onto the side of a freshly painted garage. While we are keeping the lineup a surprise until the evening, you can expect some vintage European animation, an inventive silent-era sci-fi and even an unclassifiable oddity produced right here in Eastern Pennsylvania. All films will be projected from 16mm prints!

Join us for a fun, casual screening — send over an email and we'll share the address. Folks will start gathering around 7pm and we will start the projection at 7:30pm. The program will be 60-70 minutes long. Bring a chair, a blanket, snacks.

Thank you to Amy Schaefer & Bill Schaefer, and to Lightbox Film Center (Jesse Pires) and The Secret Cinema (Jay Schwartz) for loaning film prints for this screening.

Inhabiting the fringes of Modesto, California in the toxic haze of the 1980’s, Warm Blood is a politically subversive, searing collage of sound, narrative, documentary and trash B movie meta-narratives, hand stitched by filmmaker Rick Charnoski in his debut feature. We are overjoyed to welcome the filmmaker for a Q&A in his hometown of Emmaus, PA, part of Warm Blood's cross-country tour.

Landis Cinema (Buck Hall), Lafayette College

Lehigh Valley Cinema Club and Lafeyette College Department of Film & Media Studies present:
Gabbeh, dir. Mohsen Makhmalbaf, 1996, Iran/France, 75 mins, digital

Free screening

A poetic, dreamlike vision from one of Iran's most celebrated filmmakers, Gabbeh portrays the traditionally nomadic Qashqai people of Southern Iran. Makhmalbaf Film House describes the film's narrative: "On the banks of a stream, an old woman and her husband are washing their Gabbeh [a type of traditional Persian rug]. From this carpet comes forth a beautiful young woman—aptly named Gabbeh—who shares her epic tale: she is desperately in love with a mysterious horseman who follows her clan from [behind]. Though her father has agreed to let her marry the man, season after season, the horseman follows Gabbeh—always present, always waiting, howling songs of love after nightfall."

Purling Hiss is the longtime project of Mike Polizze (Birds of Maya, Watery Love), currently joined in power rock trio formation by drummer Ben Leaphart and bassist Pat Hickey. From their first self-titled LP, released in 2009 on Permanent Records, the group has explored the outer fringes of rock cutting a piste across albums and live sets that place in equal measure the experimental and the accessible. Their newest album Drag on Girard (Drag City, 2023) encapsulates this approach: while the compositions are tighter and perhaps more "song-based" than some earlier approaches, the group left ample room for ideas to emerge: "It was an off-the-cuff process where the songs were mostly written but I told everybody don’t worry about it. Let’s have something loose."

---

Lehigh Valley legend Brother JT has recently self-released his 29th(?) album "Shaky Jet Loner", yet another inventive collection of delectable psychedelia and psychedelic delectations. The project began 30+ years ago with two releases on the revered Twisted Village label: 1991's Descent, a snarling, free jazz-skronk inversion of John Coltrane's Ascensions and 1992's Meshes of the Afternoon, which documents the aftereffects of Maya Deren's avant-garde visions on the inner ear. Along the way, countless tunes dropped like manna from the heavens across 7"s, LPs and CD-Rs, including a number for his own imprint Bedlam Records. For this occasion, the Brother JT combo will be joined by bassist Bill Melcher, their first performance together in nearly 20 years!

---

Allentown's Catatonic Suns bury their 90s indie sensibilities underneath blankets of psychedelia. Initially starting as a lo-fi recording project, the group soon blossomed into a full band performing live across the USA and recording their first two albums with producer Matt Molchany at Bethlehem's Shards Studios. Their most recent full-length, Saudade, shows a love for Spacemen 3, My Bloody Valentine, Stone Temple Pilots and all sorts of pre-millennial rock'n'roll mess across ten cuts.
