C.W. Winter - The Works and Days: The Black Sections LP
General Asst. (GA005), 2022, UK
This LP is a not necessarily a soundtrack but rather a companion to the eight-hour experimental documentary film The Works and Days (of Tayoko Shiojiri in the Shiotani Basin) directed by C.W. Winter and Anders Edström. MUBI, who distribute the film and where it streams for free with subscription, describe it: "Set in a village of 47 inhabitants in the mountains of Kyoto Prefecture, Japan, The Works and Days is a geographic description of the work and non-work of a farmer. A portrait, over five seasons, of a family, of a terrain, of a soundscape, and of duration itself."
While this record evokes the film's slow mood and atmospheric sensibility, it also draws together key experimental sound works that are interesting enough without having seen the film, by artists such as Tony Conrad, Graham Lambkin, Mary Jane Leach, Alvin Lucier, Phill Niblock and Élaine Radigue.
